Awahono School – Grey Valley is a vibrant rural school located in the heart of the Grey Valley, in the friendly village of Ahaura. Our catchment area includes children from Moonlight, Totara Flat, Ngahere, Haupiri, Ikamatua, and Ahaura.
The name Awahono means “the merging of rivers”, reflecting the way our surrounding communities connect—just like the rivers that flow into the majestic Big Grey River.
Our school combines the charm of a rural environment with excellent modern facilities. We have:
Five well-equipped classrooms
Library and multi-purpose room
Covered, heated swimming pool
Food technology area
Covered verandas and walkways connecting all learning spaces
Our grounds include a large open playing field, adventure playground, sandpit, hard court areas, an orchard, and a glasshouse cared for by our students. Our student-designed bike track, built with the help of our parent community, is a popular feature for active play and learning.
Awahono School enjoys wonderful community support. Parents and caregivers are active in school life—volunteering in classrooms, helping on trips, and joining in events like assemblies, productions, pet days, school camps, and outdoor activities.
We are proud members of the Midland Line cluster, working alongside Paparoa Range, Lake Brunner, Kumara, and Barrytown Schools for sports and events. We also participate in the Toki Pounamu Cluster , Manaiakalani and the Māwhera Community of Learning, offering our students a range of collaborative learning opportunities.
